Not so Starving Artists

When imagining a future for their children, most parents picture their kids working as doctors, lawyers or engineer. Parents want their children to pursue a career that will make use of the years of school and thousands of dollars paid for an education.

The job title “artist” has never been one that fits this description.

But the Woodland Art Department has set out to prove this generalization wrong.

Chris Misuraca, a fines arts teacher at Woodland, is organizing a presentation for both parents and students to prove that kids can make a living in the art field.

“Parents do not like the idea of paying for their kids to major in art,” said Misuraca. “But the art field is such a broad one, most people don’t realize how many opportunities there are for someone majoring in art.”

For example, art majors can go on to have careers in graphic design, advertising, or even interior and exterior design.

To get this message out to the community, Misuraca has asked a group of Woodland alumni, of all of which have careers in the art field, to give a presentation at Woodland.

“There’s going to be about six alumni,” said Misuraca. “They’re just going to talk about their college and career experience in the art field.”

Misuraca hopes that the event will encourage kids to peruse art careers without worrying about a lack of finances.  He also hopes that it will ease the minds of parents who worry about their kids entering the art field.

The event will take place on February 27th at 7pm in the Woodland Auditorium.

Parents, students, and teacher are welcome to attend the event.
