Freshmen Hallway Decorations Misunderstood

Flowered headbands and peace signs. Leg warmers and perms. Disco and bright colors. Leather jackets and fancy dresses.

The students of Woodland Regional High School dressed to impress during Spirit Week on Wednesday, November 20th. Each class’s hallway was decorated by students to represent a different time period. The freshmen had the 60’s era, sophomores embodied the 80’s, juniors were the 70’s, and seniors killed it with the 50’s.

As students dressed in their time period’s attire they perused around school checking out all the decorations. They were either confused or shocked when they first saw the freshmen hallway. Bare lockers were all they saw.

Bare lockers was not all there was, however. In the spirit of the 60’s, the freshmen class donated a thanksgiving basket which includes all of the trimmings a family would need. The 60’s emitted a feeling of peace, love, and happiness; especially from the mindset of a hippie. The Woodland Regional Student Council donated one hundred dollars to the freshmen class to get them started. Seventy five dollars of it was donated as that was the cost of the basket. Student council along with freshman advisor, Melissa Barbero decided to give the money to people who needed it instead of decorating the hallway only to take all the decorations down days later.

At first, the freshmen class was disqualified from getting points for hallway decorations. However, later in the week, Chris Tomlin, student council advisor, and several members of student council decided to rethink their decision. Ten points were then awarded by Student Council to the freshmen class.

The freshmen were originally disqualified for failing to complete most of the tasks listed on the scoring rubric. One item listed on the rubric was to mention the class date of graduation somewhere in the hallway. At the end of the freshmen hallway, there is a poster that includes “The Class of 2017.” That one line on the poster got the freshmen ten points.

The donation by the Class of 2017 perfectly embodies the common theme of the 60’s; peace, love, and happiness.

The freshmen class did not simply “fail” to decorate their hallway. They chose to do something unique, which demonstrated what the 60’s really meant to them.
