Forensic Science Club comes to Woodland

One club at Woodland will soon be taking on another aspect of the world, the crime world.

Clubs at Woodland are not unheard of and this year, Junior, Clara Atallah with the help of forensic science teacher, Thomas Fiege, has decided to create a Forensic Science Club for students.

Currently, Atallah is taking Fiege’s forensic science course and this is exactly where the idea stemmed from. In class, Atallah’s interest was piqued learning about a murder case called “The Woodchipper”, in which a serial murderer hid his secret life of slaying. It was then the idea for a forensic’s club came to Atallah’s mind.

The purpose of the club is to help promote personal development by encouraging students to be creative in deductive reasoning and problem-solving, while fostering principles of leadership, character, and teamwork. They hope to facilitate an environment where students can connect with the scientific community through a shared love of forensic science.

CSI: Woodland is a group where people can do case studies and have fun and help their future in the forensic science field or whatever field of science they want to go into,” said Atallah. “It should be really fun.”

With all of the practice and training they receive after school, the group will compete in the Civics First High School Forensics Competition in the spring of 2014. Teams consist of three students each and there is no limit to the amount of teams that can enter. This is a realistic, hands-on competition designed for students with the opportunity to conduct a full-scale investigation of a fictional crime.

The club not only plans on entering this competition, but also hopes to host guest speakers in the field of forensics and go on field trips to help the group gain more knowledge about the forensics world.

The club is set to meet on Thursdays and all people who are interested should see Feige or Atallah to sign up. Happy crime fighting!
