Woodland Students hit the Slopes

As winter draws nearer, members of Woodland’s ski club are getting ready to hit the slopes. While student skiers and snowboarders are invited to join the club and spend time in the snow, the club is open to faculty as well. No one knows this better than ski club advisor, Chris Misuraca, who has been skiing for as long as he can remember.

“I’ve skied all my life, since I was four years old,” said Misuraca. “And I was a ski instructor when I was in high school. I skied for the University of Connecticut.”

Misuraca and co-advisor Kristen Lengyel hope to pass on this love of skiing by taking several trips to Mt. Southington in Plantsville, Connecticut. The planned dates for the trips are the 9th, 16th, and 30th of January, and the 6th of February. Mt. Southington is a ski area in Plantsville, Connecticut. In 2014, the mountain will be celebrating fifty years of business since its start in 1964.

The mountain has fourteen trails total for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. Five of the trails are for beginners, six are for intermediate members, and five are for experts. Also, this year, the ski club is not requiring its members to take lessons prior to the trips, so students with little or no experience may take part in the program.

The number of students in the club varies from year to year, but in recent years, as the economy has plummeted, less and less students have joined ski club. The students believe that skiing on their own is cheaper than skiing with the school.

“The reason we have ski club is to make it easier and more affordable for kids,” said Misuraca.

The price for a student includes the cost of five lift tickets and transportation for the four dates. However, the price for a student will vary depending on whether or not they will be using their own skis or snowboard. If a student is going to use their own equipment, the cost for the season will be $219. To rent a pair of skis, the total cost for the trip is $269, and to rent a snowboard, the total cost of the trip is $304. Because the trip is so expensive, ski club is holding a fundraiser so that students can raise money to pay for their trip.

If any student is interested in joining ski club this year, they must have their money in to Mr. Misuraca in room 125 or Mrs. Lengyel in room 105 before Thanksgiving.
