Woodland Worldwide:: Encouraging more males to join

To persuade more males to join the club formerly known as Woodland for Women Worldwide, Lisa Olivere and Meghan Hatch, the women of room 203 decided to change the club’s name.

Woodland Worldwide, the club’s new name, has accomplished many things in the last four years.

They have helped diminish the oppressed rights of women, addressed gender issues and have educated the students, teachers, parents, and community members on the struggles that women face in our world today. They have also donated money to nonprofit organizations such as the Somaly Mam Foundation, the Gimbichu Project, and Ethiopia Reads and offer scholarships to girls and an Alumni Service Abroad program for graduates.

However, most people know Woodland Worldwide as Woodland for Women Worldwide. So, why change the name?

“Getting more males involved in the organization is a huge priority,” said Hatch.

Before the name change, people thought of Woodland for Women as a women’s only club. However, the organization strongly encourages all of Woodland- both girls and boys- to join. Woodland Worldwide will also be starting the “Real Man Campaign” which Hatch hopes will persuade men to get involved as well.

“We are looking for members who demonstrate empathy, compassion, support, and belief in the equality of women’s rights,” said Hatch. “Things won’t change unless everyone gets on board.”

One way the group has worked to get the community involved is through the annual Run for a Revolution. This has helped Olivere and Hatch raise money and awareness for their organization. The run raises enough money to sustain a third world community for a lifetime. After raising about $45,000 in just four years, Woodland Worldwide has been very successful in its fundraising.

“It’s all about getting the community to come together,” Hatch said. “One person can change something, but many people can change everything.”
