Journalism Department Offers Rewards for Student Involvement

In an attempt to keep students informed about what is going on at Woodland and help everyone become more involved in the school, Woodland’s Journalism department has decided to offer some incentive.

For the first time, WRHSmedia will be rewarding those who follow them on Twitter. As of right now the Journalism department’s twitter, @wrhsmedia, has a total of 210 followers. Each day the number seems to be increasing and members of the journalism staff are excited to see students are becoming more interested in activities taking place around the school.

On Friday night, one journalist, Mike Conway, took it upon himself to live tweet Woodland’s football game against Pomperaug to keep those who could not intend informed about what was going on. Conway’s tweets brought in a number of followers and sparked an idea in journalist, Katie Drewry’s mind, “Why not offer a prize for our 200th follower?”.

Well, this idea was brought to light and @wrhsmedia tweeted, “We are 1 follower away from reaching 200! Follow us quick, lucky number 200 gets a 5$ Dunkin gift card!”.  This tweet was the first of many to come. As the year continues, the journalism department will be offering rewards to loyal followers who are taking an interest in not only what the journalism department is doing, but what is going on in Woodland and Region 16.

“By gaining twitter followers we will be spreading more news about what’s going on in and around Woodland to students, parents, and other community members,” said Drewry. “More people will be able to learn what’s going on in the school and it will be attract more people to our website for more information as well.”

While follower number 200 has yet to claim his prize, the students of Journalism are already working to set up a second random drawing. This drawing will be for those who already follow @wrhsmedia and one lucky winner will be rewarded with a $10 gift card to Dunkin Donuts.

“I think the drawings are a good idea because they help get students interested,” said Drewry. “Not only do students become interested in what’s on our twitter, but also with what is going on at Woodland.”
