Senior Class Leaving a Legacy

“Who do you want to be remembered as, what year do you want to be compared to, or do you want to make your own legacy?”

Each football season head coach, Tim Shea poses these questions to his seniors. While the questions in 2013 were no different than in the past, the seniors’ answer has been cleared than ever before.

Although is it relatively early in the season, it is quite surprising how well Woodland’s football is doing. While the football team is working to fulfill the requests of Coach Shea, they are not the only sports team excelling this year. Many other fall sports at Woodland are coming out on top as well.

Cross country has finished their NVL season with the girls having an undefeated record of 14-0. It wasn’t just their small meets the girls found success at, their last win just happened to be the NVL Championship, along with the Brass Division win.

Volleyball has been quite underrated as well this year with fourteen wins and just one loss to Naugatuck. And even with this one loss, they are seeded number one in the NVL…not to mention number one in the state.

With other seasons coming to a close, football still has a long road ahead of them.

“We came into the season and prepared the same way we always do, with the same set of goals every year, and the first goal on that list is to make the top eight in the NVL and make it to the playoffs,” said Coach Shea.

This year accomplishing these goals should not be a problem considering the team is now 6-0 after their last win against Pomperaug.

Not only have the seniors on the football team been working to create motivation, but the senior class of 2014 is also a huge contributor to the games and success this fall season.

Even students who do not play sports themselves have found a way to be involved in the success. Many upperclassmen athletes have been rallying kids together to show their school spirit at games including volleyball and football.

“We haven’t had a class like this one with this much support since 2003, 2004, and 2005.” said Shea. “The student support has been great and winning definitely helps.”

This season, Woodland had one of its biggest student sections in history for the Naugatuck game at home on October 4th 2013. That game had been widely anticipated by many, there was even a ‘black and gold day’ at school that Friday where all students and staff were told to wear the school colors to support the game that night. And when the Hawks came out with the win, fireworks shot off in the distance, something magical, as if it were a movie. That night was a special moment for not only the players, but the students who attended.

On October 18th, the fans pulled it together again and arranged a fan bus to bring Woodland fans to Pomperaug where the hawks got their sixth win.

“Every senior class is different, and with this one I see a lot of leadership and support.” said Shea. “They definitely are making their own legacy this time.”
