High school is the time to decide what you want to do in college and in life.

For senior, Nick Barra, high school has given him just that.

“I really like music,” said Barra. “I’ve been playing piano since I was six,” and he admits that music is a big part of his life.

Because of his love for music Barra decided to base his senior project around it.

“For my senior project I made a CD of several original songs of varying genres, everything from jazz to electronic,” stated Barra.

He sees a future for himself with music production and thought this project would help him step closer to that future.

When looking back on the whole experience Barra admits that his favorite part was writing the songs. “I’ve never really written that many songs before so it was something new and exciting for me to do,” said Barra.

Barra hopes that this is only the beginning for his music career as after high school he will major in audio and music production at Western Connecticut State University.

Over the four years Barra has taken an active role in Woodland’s Fine Art program. He has taken several of the offered music classes and has participated in the band and in the Jazz Kings.

Barra’s experience at Woodland helped him to make his senior project possible.

His CD’s are currently available for purchase of $5 if you contact him or Mr. St. George.

Looking back on his four years Barra gives some advice to fellow students who have a love for music.

“Take as many fine arts classes as you possibly can and get involved with extracurricular activities with the pit band with the jazz ensemble. And just keep practicing and playing as much as you can,” said Barra.

“I really wouldn’t be much without music,” he states. “Mr. St. George and Mr. Lewis have been a big influence on my life as a musician they’ve taught me a lot and they have really helped me to decide what my future is going to be.”
