Boys Swimming vs. Wilby (Senior Night)

Every high school athletic career must come to an end. The moment is bittersweet, as an athlete, takes their last dive, swing, or lap. A mix of emotions is experienced, as their career has been fun, however it cannot last.

Some athletes are fortune enough and talented enough to continue their athletic endeavors at the collegiate level, but for many it is the end of the road.

Surrounded by teammates, and loved ones an athlete savors the bliss as they see the end of the road approaching, in this case Steve McCusker and Patrick Dietz experienced this last night as they swam for the last time in the Woodland pool.

Woodland Boys Swimming had their last meet of the year against Wilby yesterday, and it proved to be another win for the Hawks.

The night started out in Woodland’s favor as Aidan Music, sophomore, took home the 100 meter butterfly, in a close race.

Wilby followed the Hawks closely as they were down by a mere four points early in the meet.

The Hawks really started to run away with the lead, as juniors Andy O’Dell, and Alan Katrenya took first and second in the grueling 500 meter freestyle. Andy O’Dell came close to his record time in the 500 free, but only missed it by three seconds.

Later the Hawks took first in the 200 meter freestyle, but Wilby managed to grab first in the 100 butterfly, and senior Patrick Dietz managed to snag second place for Woodland, and third place was captured by freshman, Donovan White.

With Wilby close behind the Hawks pulled away for the final time, as they took first and second in the 400 meter freestyle relay, including an outstanding effort by junior, Lauren Tompkins who edged the competition by fractions of a second to give Woodland fist and second place in the event.

Woodland finished with a final score 85 to 72, capturing their final win of the regular season.

Senior Steve McCusker, followed suit with the Hawks and edged out the competition as well, but he did it on the diving board.

With his last home win, McCusker gave wrhsmedia an exclusive interview, and a possible peak into his near future.

“I am hopefully looking to continue to dive when I go to college, and I am looking at UMass-Amherst, hopefully, but that is a Division I school, so I would love to dive out there. I am also looking at a Division II school called Westchester, which is located in Pennsylvania.” said McCusker in regards to his future in diving.

McCusker also had to overcome a case of strep throat to lock down the win last night.

“To be totally honest with you I think it made me do better, I got a 190 today and that is an above average score, especially considering that I have not dove in two weeks” said McCusker after winning the diving portion of the meet yesterday.

McCusker and Dietz both did excellent yesterday, and wrhsmedia wishes them the best in their future endeavors.
