Art Department Decorates for Winter in Memory of Newtown

When art teacher Lisa Seagren was visiting with her mother over the holiday vacation, she noticed that her mother had some unique homemade décor in her house.

“She had these 3D paper snowflakes and they were gorgeous,” said Seagren.

Her mother had learned to make the snowflakes through a group at her church. The ladies made the snowflakes to display at the town bank in Newtown, to remember all the victims of the school shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month.

“So I had my mother teach me how to make them and then I taught my students,” said Seagren

On the first days back from Holiday Break, Seagren had her Art Skills classes make some of the 3D paper snowflakes.

“I thought it would be just an easy and fun way to ease kids back into the school year,” said Seagrean. “Plus it would prepare them for a paper making assignment we will be working on.”

Seagren than displayed the creations on the front doors of Woodland and other places around the school.

“Seeing the snowflakes on the door when I walked into school was nice,” said junior Caroline Ecke. “They make the schoolseem peaceful and the fact that they are in memory of the Newtown victims, makes them even nicer.”
