Self Defense at Woodland

selfDefenseTraining2   Whether it’s in a scene from Miss Congeniality or in the real world self-defense is something everyone should know.

At least that’s what senior, Kasey Smith, thought about when creating her senior project.

Smith has taken karate for nine years and as part of her senior project she decided she wanted to give a little back to the Woodland community.

For her senior project Smith is holding a woman’s self-defense class and seminar.

On January 28th the seminar will be held after school in a classroom and will teach the participants a little bit more about the subject of self-defense.

And then on February 11th and 13th the participants will be taught some basic self-defense moves.

Things covered in the seminar and class will include statistics and basic things of how the body moves which will allow someone to understand how to counter act other moves. Along with this will be practice on how to escape from a situation.

While it is advised for a participant to come to the seminar and both sessions’ people are allowed to come when they can even if it is not to all of them.

“I believe it is an important issue,” said Smith. “I’ve seen women come into my [karate] studio because they are afraid and they want to know how they can feel safe again.”

So whether it’s an iconic scene in a movie like Miss Congeniality or everyday life; self-defense is important and students at Woodland will now have an opportunity to learn to defend themselves.
