Liz Martin’s Remembrance Ribbons

266-365-thickboxIn a time of tragedy and sadness, the students and staff of Woodland Regional High School were immediately looking for ways to bring relief and happiness to the men, women, and children affected by the tragedy in Sandy Hook. On December 17, 2012 Woodland was dressed in blue, yellow, green, and white to commemorate the victims in Newtown, Connecticut. But there was one student who was looking to commemorate just a little bit more. Senior Elizabeth Martin decided to create green and white remembrance ribbons in honor of the victims.

“First I just made the ribbons for myself, my parents, and my close friends,” said Martin. “Everyone complimented them and said that they wanted one, so I decided why not make more and turn it into a fundraiser!”

Starting on Monday, Martin began selling the hand-made green and white ribbons for a dollar each. With the start of the sales, ribbons could be found pinned on the chests of nearly every student.

“The ribbons make people realize that they can help in a small way,” stated Martin, “and it made our students and staff feel hopeful and useful when they had felt useless.”

Martin, who hand-crafted each and every ribbon, perfecting the lengths of each green and white string, has raised over three hundred dollars in just one short week. All proceeds will be used to purchase new supplies for the students of Sandy Hook Elementary.

“So many people have been overly generous,” said Martin, “I’m charging one dollar a ribbon and one boy gave me thirty two dollars for two ribbons.”

With the generosity and kind-heartedness of the Woodland population, Martin should be able to raise even more money. And her ribbons will bring more than just funds to purchase new school supplies. These ribbons will help students and staff remember and carry on the victims of this tragedy.
