Woodland Students Plan to Show Support to Sandy Hook Shooting Victims

On Friday afternoon, just a few minutes before the bell rang dismissing Woodland students for the weekend principal Dr. Frank came on the intercom as he does every afternoon. The announcements were nothing special, just simple reminders. Until he announced that all school activities were cancelled for the entire weekend because of a school shooting in Newtown. Cancelling all sports practices and games was stunning enough, let alone the school shooting aspect. Students in every grade had their eyes glued to their smart phones as they walked to their cars and buses. Through Google searches, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram students learned the sickening details of a tragedy that was so close to home. Friday morning a gunman opened fire on Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing a total of 26 students and staff members. Statistically it was the 2nd worst school shooting in United States history. The details are overwhelming but now it’s time to start picking up the pieces. Tomorrow, Monday December 17th 2012, Woodland students and faculty are asked to wear blue and yellow(the colors that Newtown unifies under) or green and white(the colors of Sandy Hook Elementary School.) The WRHSMedia Journalism Department will be taking a group picture of everyone who participates and a sympathy card will be sent to the Newtown School District. The best thing that Woodland can do during this time is to show our support to the Sandy Hook community so please make an effort to participate.
