Interview with senior Ainsley McMahon

Where is this school located?

Middletown, CT

What did you like about the location?

“Well it’s in like your classic little college town with a bit of a downtown but mostly residential. And I’m not much of a city person; this college fits me. It’s still in CT so I’m close to my family and friends and I can come home on the weekends and go back to Brass City Ballet. It’s about a half hour away from Prospect which is enough distance for me. It is far enough to have your own life, but close enough to not be stranded.”

“What was the campus like? Did you meet any students? If so, what were they like?”

“I did meet a student. One girl saw me looking around and actually let me into her dorm, which was really sweet and generous of her. So I talked to her and she said everyone here at this school is really involved and just cares a lot. She really stressed that a lot of Wesleyan students had a great variety of interests. She herself was triple majoring in chemistry, physics, and music so there is definitely room to be yourself and study what you like there. And the dorms were actually pretty nice, too. They were spacious with considerable natural lighting, so all good things.”

“The campus is really cool, it’s almost like a neighborhood. There are some schools that are like a bunch of buildings all the same grey brick building like Uconn, which I also toured. But, this was a bunch of buildings on a couple of different streets that all had character which were all different buildings for different majors and classes. There was a student center and some other classroom buildings and a couple of dorms that overlooked the quad, at the head of which was this gorgeous library. I went into a couple of buildings and they were all very clean and new and up-to-date, nothing ever looked rundown or dirty.”

What was unique about this school?

“Well they had this program called the College of Letters, which I hadn’t seen before. According to their website, it’s an “interdisciplinary major combining history, literature, and philosophy,” which seems fascinating and is indicative of their being a good liberal arts school and I picked up a course catalogue and would just open it up to any page and on every single page there was a class that I’d be happy to take. I felt like a lot of fields of studies are covered there.”

How big would you say the school is?

“It’s not super big like there is definitely a central campus feel bit it was not tiny either. It covered a couple of streets.”

Of the other schools you’ve toured, what school was most similar to this one in respect to the campus?

“I would say Tufts is most similar.”

What type of person would this school most apply to?

“This is definitely a school for dedicated students. It probably wouldn’t be good for people interested in hard sciences or business or something. It is definitely a liberal artsy kind of school. Yes, they have science programs, but it doesn’t have the vibes.”
