To the Victor Goes the Spoils (academically speaking, of course)

Last night June 7th of  2012 WRHS hosted the annual Awards night. Students of all classes attended the awards night.

Seniors earned 137 awards. The Senior class won 16 awards in applied technologies, five awards total in athletics, 13 awards in fine arts, humanities earned two awards, three awards in mathematics, 31 awards in principle recognition, four awards in PTO, three awards in science, and nine awards in world language.

The juniors won 113 awards all together. Individually they won: 11 awards in applied technologies,  two in fine arts, 14 in mathematics, three in principle recognition, four in science, five in world languages, and three in guidance.

The sophomores won 99 awards all together. Individual awards go to: two in applied technologies, one in fine arts, four in humanities, 14 in mathematics, one in PTO, four in science, and three in world languages.

The freshmen also boasted their academic achievements at the ceremony. They came in with 21 awards all together but individually they won: one in fine arts, three in humanities, seven in mathematics, two in PTO, three in science, and six in world languages.

Students work hard all year for this moment in which they receive their payoff. It may not come to them until senior year but achieving academic and athletic scholarships is a big reward to win at the award ceremony.

There were 64 scholarships given out to deserving students at the ceremony; adding up to $73,950 total. Some students were able to accept multiple scholarships but there were 54 seniors who received scholarships at the awards ceremony.

The awards ceremony is one last appreciation ceremony to all the seniors who worked hard and earned their way to college.

“This year, we lost someone special in our Region 16 family. As some of you may know, Mrs. Durkee passed away suddenly this year. She had taught for over 30 years in Region 16, inspiring students and her fellow teachers with a love of learning, and a love of life. When this sudden tragedy occurred, the Durkee family thought it would only be fitting if a scholarship was created in her memory to aide a graduating student from WRHS who was going to college to become an elementary teacher. The donations that were given in memory of Mrs. Durkee have enabled the Durkee family (with the help of the Region 16 Education Association) to provide this scholarship not only for this year, but for the next 16 years. We would like to congratulate the winner of this scholarship, (student’s name), and hope that you enjoy learning how to become an excellent teacher during your college years and most importantly… that you have the positive impact that Mrs. Durkee had upon her students during her tenure here in Region 16.” Sincerely, Stephen
