Moore Plays Last Game In College Uniform

On April 4th, the UConn Women’s Basketball team took the court in Indianapolis to take on rival Notre Dame. For the first three games this season, UConn was dominant in beating the Irish. Unfortunately, the fourth time was a charm for Notre Dame as they beat UConn 72-63 in the national semi-final game.

The UConn Women never quite got on rhythm and Senior forward Maya Moore did not have the supporting cast she would have hoped to have in one of her final games.

For Moore and fellow Senior Lorin Dixon, it was their last game in a college uniform.

Dixon and Moore compiled a record of 150-4 during their four year tenure at UConn.

Although Moore did not get a chance for her third consecutive national championship, Head Coach Geno Auriemma believes she has nothing to hang her head about.

She was relentless in every aspect of the game for her four years, and Auriemma believes that there might not have been a better person or player to have around for four years.

During her senior year, Moore averaged 22.5 points She scored 36 points against Notre Dame during the semi-final game which was the third most ever scored in a semi-final game.

Moore also became UConn’s all-time leading scorer and became second in rebounds which passed former Uconn player and ESPN Analyst Rebecca Lobo.

She was a four-time All-American who led her team to two national championships.

During her career, she became a 3,000 point scorer and is currently fourth on the NCAA Women’s Division One scoring list.

Moore was a three time Wade trophy winner, the only women’s college basketball player to do so. She was also a two-time Associated Press Player of the year.

Not to mention everything she did on the court, she did great off the court as well. Moore held a 3.7 GPA which was the highest among the players at the Final Four. With that GPA, she earned the Elite 88 award.

The award honors a student-athlete who has reached a peak in their national athletic level all while maintaining the highest GPA.

With all of the accolades that Moore has compiled together throughout her career, losing one short of the national championship game is nothing to hang her head about.

Unlike Former UConn player Diana Taurasi, Moore had a starting five consisting of two freshman. Taurasi won three national championships with experienced seniors.

Moore will now most likely be the first pick in the WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx where she will be teamed Stanford Alum Candice Wiggins, LSU Alum Seimone Augustus, and Minnesota Alum Lindsay Whalen.

Although her career at UConn is over, Moore will achieve just as much success at the next level with her relentless work ethic.
