Percy and Pizza

The Prospect Public Library Percy and Pizza program gave the chance for kids to slip away into the fantasy world of imagination and lose themselves in Greek Mythology. Creating many children programs in the past, library director, Loren Webber, knew Percy and Pizza would be a success. In late September the Prospect Public Library invited children of all ages to join them for pizza and a showing of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.
The books have been a huge success among adolescents and adults alike. Rita Plante, sixth grader, admitted to reading the first book of the series and enjoyed the movie experience. Other attendees including Catherine Melchionne and Ryan Knoble had not read the books beforehand but agreed that the movie was spectacular.
And the movie captured the fancy of adults, as well. Plante confessed she really enjoyed the scene in which the young demigods, sons and daughters of the gods, play Capture the Flag. Kyle Knoble, elementary schooler, agreed and explained that the demigod campers in the movie did not tag anyone, but used their swords and shields instead.
According to Publishers weekly, the book has sold over 275,000 copies and the movie brought in about 90 million dollars according to boxofficemojo.com. Rick Riordan, with the assistance of director Chris Columbus, have created a franchise phenomenon that is delighting movie audiences with Greek mythology, witty dialogue and intense battle scenes.
Ryan Knoble, elementary school student, enjoyed the movie, even the more graphic scenes. “I liked the part where Medusa’s head was sliced off,” said Knoble.
