World Cup Discussion

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be  in South Africa this year and will host 32 countries.

Many Americans are rooting for their own country to win. They do field a good team headed by Landon Donovan, the team’s star forward, and the coach, Bob Bradley. The United States were drawn into group C along with Slovenia, Algeria and England. In the world cup format only two teams move past the group stages and since there are 8 groups, the two teams with the best record from each group move onto the 16 team playoff format.

On the FIFA world soccer ranking the top five teams are Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands and Italy. The United States is currently ranked 14 on the FIFA world soccer rankings.

Some of the favorites to win the FIFA World Cup are Brazil, who has won a record 5 World Cup titles, Portugal, who has one of the best players in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo and Spain, sported by their two powerful forwards David Villa and Fernando Torres.

Soccer ranks as the 5th most popular American sport to watch. In other countries around the world, despite all of other kinds of sports, soccer is among the favorite one also.

The World Cup this year will be air on the ESPN family of networks and ESPN3.com. Every game will be televised from the group stages to the Final on ABC that is set to take place in soccer city (Johannesburg). This summer the whole world will be watching the World Cup in South Africa. The FIFA World Cup is a perfect time for the world to come together and follow a sport that causes national pride in everybody, even the United States.
