Ski Club Gearing Up For Winter

Winter is on its way and that means only one thing to some people, skiing.

The Woodland ski club will be gearing up soon in preparation for the new season.

A club meeting will be established in a couple of weeks and paperwork will be going home.

There are a few things the clubs advisor and one biggest partakers in the sport of skiing, wants people to know.

“There are two things that make a good ski season,” said Chris Misuraca, “cold weather and snow.”

He said that students weren’t signing up because they believed that since there was no snow in Connecticut, they thought that there was none in Vermont.

“For example, one year we took a trip to Okemo. But when we left Connecticut it was raining, but Okemo got two feet of fresh powder,” said Misuraca.

Misuraca said that there is another misconception that has hindered attendance in the past.

If a student plays a sport then he or she is also allowed to join the ski club. The coach cannot tell the student that they cannot join or go on the trip unless; the student is going to miss a practice or game.

“Ski club is a club, you’re not allowed to do two sports, but you can play a sport and join a club,” said Misuraca, “kids have misunderstood this in the past.”

The economy may also affect participation in the club this year.

People might be more inclined to spend their money more wisely, but resorts are doing something to bring in more skiers and snowboarders.

“Most resorts have been taking a big hit in this economy, but now they are cutting prices in order to attract more visitors,” said Misuraca.
