Hawks Remain Strong

There are never enough words to describe a team like the Woodland Girls Volleyball team. Hardworking and determined helps, but not quite. The volleyball team has gone on a winning streak of eight since losing to Seymour on October 5th.

Their newest victory came against the Torrington Red Raiders on October 23rd. The games did not come handily to the Hawks though, but keeping their composure they came through. The Hawks won the three first games (25-20), (25-10), (25-20) to close the match as a whole.

After a quick start to lead 2-0 behind Senior Erika Barnett’s two points, the Raiders came back slowly. Soon enough they led the game by one only to have the Hawks come back and tie it at 8-8. From then on, the Hawks took the lead for the rest of the game, taking their highest lead of six at one point. The Raiders were trying to stay close in the game, but could not quite find the answer. Woodland came out with the game (25-20).

The second game started off slow, but then turned around to be dominant. The Hawks began behind, until they tied the score at 3-3. Keeping the Raiders at those three points, Woodland went on a run of five points to lead 8-3. The Hawks were not letting Torrington get back into the game, as they led forcefully through out the rest, to allow the Raiders to earn only ten points, (25-10).

Starting off rather slow, the Hawks were down for most of the beginning of the third game. They played from behind, being down 0-3. Staying composed, Woodland came back to tie the game at 6-6. But, Torrington wasn’t ready to let them go on a run. It was a close game between the two teams, having being tied four times. From the tie at 15-15, the Hawks took their lead and would take it the rest of the game. Torrington kept their heads up high though, and fought back eagerly. One thing the Raiders could not handle during the final points of the game were the kills. Key kills by Seniors Stephanie Badale and Emily Hutvagner helped to close out the game (25-20).

Head coach James Amato knows that the girls are able to stay focused and come back from slow starts.
“We have a habit of starting off slow. Being behind 3-4 points makes our team tighten up and show how strong they can work together as a team,” he explained, “The girls don’t play any different – it just takes them longer to come back and pull out the win.”

The Hawks (15-1) are getting ready to finish their season with victories, while focusing on NVLS.

Woodland has been preparing in different ways during practice which might be the cause in their dominant season.
“Instead of focusing on big skills and big plays, as the season progresses we are working on smaller details like moving without the ball, very small things ,” stated Amato.

The Hawks hope to continue their winning streak with their last two games of the regular season. They face Wolcott for senior night, home on October 26th, and rival Seymour (their only loss of the season) away to cap up the season.
