On the Floor No More

Revolt. Riot. Treason. It was a good day for a revolution during third lunch.

Students cried out in protest. The new rule enforced by school administration was creating havoc.

As of late September, it is now against the rules for students to sit on the floor outside of the cafeteria during all lunch waves.

Notified by a concerned citizen,   a state health inspector conducted an investigation on school cleanliness over a year ago. When he was called back the school decided to make some changes.

Dr. Arnold Frank, school principal did not want to risk a written citation. In response he bought approximately 50 extra chairs and scattered them throughout the cafeteria.

In the beginning most students were angry, but the immediate uproar was soon calmed as students adapted to the new surroundings.

“The most basic concern with the health inspector was the heavy foot traffic in that area. There is a lot of goose feces in the court yards, and no one really knows where peoples feet have been. This change is for their own good,” said the head janitor, John Serdy.

Allowing children to sit in the hallway during lunch is a violation of school policy.

This change in policy leaves some students out of luck, with nowhere to sit during lunch.

“On the first day, the students were very upset,” said Fred Smith.

Students found themselves in quite a predicament.

“My friends and I sit in a small circle in the hallway. We do not take up a lot of space and are sure not to block the walkway,” said sophomore Riley Shaw, “I do not think it is fair. Now we have nowhere to sit. We do not get to lunch soon enough to get chairs and frankly there are not enough for everyone to sit.”

This brings up another pressing issue. The school banned sitting on the floor, but there are not enough chairs to make up for this ban.

Now it is a competition to get chairs for lunch. The student body is learning to adapt to change.

“I always try to be understanding. I know that change, even a little bit is hard to deal with,” said Smith, “But after a few days, 99% of students just grab a chair. There are always a few to talk to, but I feel the students handled the change very well. I am proud.”

It sucks that we can’t sit on the floor. They have never done anything about it up until now. I agree with erik, they should mind their own business. It is a stupid rule.
